Opening childcare center

We are proud to announce our new project "La Casa Liam." The project is still in its early stages and is being run with the tremendous support of our volunteer employee Elvia, her daughters, and other local volunteers.

Our team in Guatemala

The idea and the name for "Casa Liam" are directly related to Michelle and Elvia. Liam is Michelle's godson and Elvia's grandson. The daycare center "Casa Liam" is named after him. Liam's mother would like to study to have a good education, get a good job, and be financially secure, which raises the question of childcare. For this reason, Elvia came up with the idea of opening a daycare center. What sounds perfectly normal to us is a completely unknown challenge in Guatemala. According to official information, there is still no daycare center in the entire country where mothers can safely leave their children for a few hours at a fair price to go to work or study.

In Guatemala, over 70% of mothers are single parents and receive no support from the fathers of their children, nor are the women integrated into the workforce. This understandably leads to a vicious cycle. The children are pushed from place to place, have no secure place to stay without their mothers so they can go to work. Unfortunately, domestic violence by relatives or acquaintances who take care of the children is more the rule than the exception in Guatemala.

To counteract this problem and give women the opportunity to leave their children in a safe place with a clear conscience, we now want to start the Women Empowerment Revolution with "Casa Liam." At "Casa Liam," the children should have everything they need, and women should finally have the chance to establish themselves in the workforce. At the same time, "Casa Liam" should also be a thank you to all our dedicated helpers on site and give something back to them. "Casa Liam" will be the first official daycare center in Jocotenango near Antigua for families with low incomes.

We have already visited some suitable houses, and one in particular stands out to us. Currently, we are making the final arrangements to purchase the house. So, now it's time to keep our fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly.
